Thai authorities recently uncovered an illegal crypto mining operation that had been stealing large amounts of electricity. This operation was found in multiple locations, including Pathum Thani, Surat Thani, and Phanat Nikhom. The miners used remote-controlled rigs hidden away in abandoned buildings and houses, making it difficult for authorities to detect them. Locals often noticed suspicious activities and reported power theft, leading to raids by law enforcement.

Additionally, the excessive energy use from these operations has been linked to frequent power outages in the surrounding areas.
Another significant seizure occurred in Phanat Nikhom, where nearly 1,000 Bitcoin mining machines were confiscated due to similar theft concerns. A raid in Ratchaburi followed complaints of power outages, leading to the discovery of yet another illegal mining site.
The scale of these operations highlights how much electricity they drain from the local infrastructure. Power outages and stress on the electricity grid often result from these activities, burdening local economies. The estimated losses from electricity theft have sometimes exceeded $327,000, with the value of seized equipment running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Additionally, the financial losses from illegal mining operations have exceeded 11 million baht, underscoring the significant impact on local resources.
Despite these efforts, regulating such operations remains a challenge. The decentralized nature of cryptocurrency makes tracking and controlling it difficult. Some miners have even modified electricity meters to evade detection. Thai authorities recognize the need for stricter laws to combat illegal mining. They are also looking to promote legitimate crypto operations through regulatory measures.
