21shares closes crypto etfs

21Shares has decided to shut down two of its cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the ARK 21Shares Active Bitcoin Ethereum Strategy ETF (ARKY) and the ARK 21Shares Active On-Chain Bitcoin Strategy ETF (ARKC).

This closure comes after a routine review of their products. Factors like market assessment, performance, and investor demand played a big role in the decision. Current market conditions also prompted the move, as there have been significant outflows from U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETFs. Significant outflows have been reported, totaling over $1.66 billion this month. This situation mirrors the characteristics of a bear market, where prolonged price declines lead to decreased investor confidence.

The decision to close the funds was influenced by market assessment, performance, and significant outflows from U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETFs.

The liquidation process for these funds will start on March 28. Shareholders can sell their shares until March 27. After this date, any remaining holdings will be liquidated automatically.

The recent downturn in cryptocurrency has not helped. Bitcoin has dropped over 12.8% this year, and the CoinDesk 20 Index has lost about 24%. Investors have pulled out over $1.66 billion from U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs this year.

The performance of ARKY and ARKC was also a concern. ARKY had an expense ratio of 0.93%, while ARKC was at 1%. Both funds did not meet benchmarks that could attract investors, and the low assets under management indicated potential sustainability issues. The broader crypto market decline has underscored challenges in cryptocurrency investments.

The market is highly competitive, and ETFs must align with what investors expect to remain viable.

Despite shutting down these funds, the crypto ETF market is still evolving. There is a growing expectation for new or improved crypto-related products in the future.

Investors will need to adapt their strategies as market conditions change. The ongoing regulatory environment may also impact what funds will be offered down the line.
